WORKS OF MERCY SERVICE PROGRAM

The Works of Mercy program fosters and promotes awareness of the need to both serve the Catholic community as well as the secular world and thus actively seek to "carry on the work of Christ under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, who came in the world to bear witness to the truth, to save and not to judge, to serve and not to be served" (GS # 3).  The purpose of the Christian Works of Mercy Service Program at Pope John XXIII is to challenge our students to live the Gospel through service to God, community and the whole world.

The Christian Works of Mercy Program promotes service in two areas:

1.             Works of Mercy offered for the Pope John XXIII Community

2.             Works of Mercy offered outside of the Pope John XXIII Community

Works of Mercy requirements will vary depending on the grade of the student, with the requirements being mandatory and overseen by the Director of Campus Ministry.  Documentation for all completed hours must be submitted no later than May 5, 2008.  The Campus Minister will maintain a list of suggested and acceptable organizations and will oversee the organization of various outside service projects through Pope John XXIII.  All questions in regards to appropriate service should be directed to the Director of Campus Ministry.

A requirement of all Theology courses at Pope John XXIII High School is the completion of a reflection paper on a significant project.  Final Examinations in Theology will not be administered to a student until all required Works of Mercy are completed and all necessary documentation is submitted.  Required documentation must be turned in to the Director of Campus Ministry within 4 weeks of completion of the Work of Mercy.

Freshman Year (15 total hours of service): Fifteen hours of works of mercy for Pope John XXIII or  through approved organizations outside of the school community.

Sophomore Year (20 total hours of service): A maximum of 10 hours may be offered for the Pope John XXIII community.  Remaining hours are to be completed outside the school community.

Junior Year (30 total hours of service): A maximum of 15 may be offered for the Pope John XXIII community.  Remaining hours are to be offered outside of the school community.

Senior Year (35 total hours of service)A maximum of 15 hours may be offered for the Pope John XXIII community.  Remaining hours are to be offered outside of the school community.
