Mathematics Department
Rhonda Lapoint rlapoint@pj23.org
A Louisiana native, Mrs. Lapoint has been teaching
mathematics for 14 years. Mrs. Lapoint possesses both a B.S. and M.Ed. in
Mathematics Education from McNeese State University. She also has earned minors
in both Computer Literacy and Computer Science. Since joining the Pope John
XXIII family, Mrs. Lapoint has taught Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Algebra II and
Computer Applications while serving as the National Honor Society Moderator and
Mathematics Department Chair. The “lights of her life” are her five beautiful
grandchildren ranging in age from 1 to 9 years old.
Patricia McCarty pmccarty@pj23.org
Paddie McCarty is a native Houstonian and a graduate of St. Theresa School and
Spring Woods High School. After earning a B.S. in Education at the
University of Texas in Austin, she earned a M.A. in Education from the
University of Arkansas and a M.A. in Administration from Texas A&M at Corpus
Christi. Ms. McCarty has over 30 years of middle and high school teaching
experience in Texas, Arkansas, and Missouri public schools. Additionally,
she has also worked as adjunct professor in junior colleges in all 3 states.
As a graduate of a Catholic elementary school herself, Ms. McCarty is glad to be
in a Catholic educational environment once again. Ms. McCarty enjoys
traveling, sports, fishing, dining, and attending plays and concerts.
Jerome Llorens jllorens@pj23.org
Jerome Llorens is a native Houstonian and
Strake Jesuit College Preparatory graduate. Mr. Llorens earned a Bachelor's
Degree in both Business Administration and Computer Information Systems
Management at Houston Baptist University. Since graduating in 2001, he has
served as a Computer and Algebra I teacher. Currently, he is the Head Varsity
Basketball Coach and serves as Offensive Coordinator for the football team at
Pope John XXIII High School.
English Department
Dolores Borchers dborchers@pj23.org
Mrs. Borchers teaches Eleventh Grade English to both
College Prep and Advanced Placement students. Dolores graduated from the
University of Texas, Austin with a B.S. in Secondary Education and majors in
both English and Speech. Before joining the Pope John XXIII faculty in 2006,
Dolores taught high school English in Katy for thirty three years and served as
English Department Chair for a number of years. Mrs.
Borchers and her husband Carl have one daughter, Claire, who lives in Houston.
Tammie Pogue tpogue@pj23.org
Most recently a teacher at the John Cooper School in the
Woodlands, Ms. Pogue joined the Pope John XXIII Faculty as an English I and II
teacher in 2006. Possessing a B.A. in English from West Georgia College as well
as a M.A. in Theatre from the University of Maine, Ms. Pogue has taught for 23
years in independent college preparatory schools in Texas as well as her native
Georgia. In addition to her secondary experience, she has served as an adjunct
professor at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. Ms. Pogue is an active member
of Christ the Good Shepherd parish in Spring.
Christina Phipps

Christina Phipps holds a B.A. in English, with a minor in Linguistics, and a
M.Ed. from the University of California at Santa Barbara. Before joining
the Pope John XXIII team, she taught American Literature and A.P. Language and
Composition at one of the largest public high schools in San Diego County,
California. As a graduate of a Catholic high school herself, Mrs. Phipps
is excited to be involved once again in Catholic education. She and her
husband are active members of St. Theresa parish in Sugar Land.
Social Studies Department
Don Lupton dlupton@pj23.org
As a member of the school’s Founding Faculty, Mr. Lupton
has nearly 40 years of experience in secondary level education and has taught in
both Catholic and public high schools as well as in a community college setting.
A native of Augusta, Georgia, Mr. Lupton was an “army brat” who spent most of
his young life moving from state to state and country to country; this is where
he picked up his love of history. He coached high school football and basketball
in Colorado. He is currently Dean of Students at Pope John XXIII High School
and also teaches World History. His wife of 38 years, Charlyn, is a former Home
Economics teacher who’s now a retired homemaker. Ryan, 35, is his oldest son
and a physical education teacher in the Alief School District. Sean, 30, is
handicapped, lives at home and is very much involved in Special Olympics. Mr.
Lupton enjoys sports, reading, and traveling and spending time with his
grandsons. After earning a B.A. in History at the University of Northern
Colorado, Greeley, Mr. Lupton attended the University of Colorado, Boulder where
he earned a M.A. in Education as well as an Administrative Certification.
Brenda Harris bharris@pj23.org
A die-hard Longhorn fan, Ms. Harris earned Masters degrees
in both History and Government at the University of Texas, Austin after earning
a B.A. at Houston Baptist University. Before joining the Pope John XXIII
faculty in 2006, Ms. Harris tutored student athletes for the University of Texas
for six years in addition to her high school teaching duties. Certified in both
English and Social Studies, Ms. Harris has taught for 38 years and coached
cheerleading for 33 of those years, earning national championship titles three
times. While she thoroughly enjoys her U.S. History and English II teaching
duties, the real joys of her life are her granddaughters, Madilyn and Makenna.
Clara Brummert cbrummert@pj23.org
The 2006/07 school year was
Clara Brummert's first year to teach World Geography and World History I at Pope
John XXIII. Prior to moving to Houston, she served her parish as Director of
Religious Education. Originally from Pennsylvania, she moved to Texas nearly 20
years ago. After earning a BA in Social Sciences at the University of
Pittsburgh, Mrs. Brummert obtained a MA in Geography at Indiana University of
Pennsylvania. She has also earned graduate credit hours in Public
Administration at West Virginia University and earned her teaching certificate
through the University of Texas.
Brent Lamers blamers@pj23.org
As a new faculty member, Mr. Lamers is eager to add Latin I to his current World
History teaching duties in the fall. Before graduating from a Catholic
high school in Detroit, Mr. Lamers and his family were long-time residents of west
Tennessee. Considering the South his true home, he returned to receive a B.A.
in History at the University of Texas, Austin and then a J.D. from the
University of Tulsa College of Law. Shortly thereafter, Mr. Lamers completed all of
the requirements necessary for certification as a social studies teacher in the
state of Texas. In his spare time, he enjoys collecting historical
artifacts, the outdoors and college sports.
Science Department
Karen Edwards kedwards@pj23.org
A Houston resident for the past six years, Ms. Edwards is a
native of the Caribbean Island of Grenada. After earning a degree in secondary
education, Karen taught high school Science and Mathematics in Grenada for three
years. She then moved to Houston and earned a Chemical Engineering Degree at
the University of Houston. Karen teaches Integrated Physics and Chemistry (IPC)
and Physics and has five years of teaching experience.
Christine Bradley cbradley@pj23.org
Mrs. Christine
Bradley serves the Pope John XXIII School Community as a Chemistry and
Pre-Calculus teacher. She has taught high school mathematics and chemistry for
9 years in Oklahoma and Texas. Before she began her teaching career, she worked
for 16 years in the oil and gas industry on environmental issues and alternate
fuels. Her degree is from the University of Missouri in Chemical Engineering
and her teacher training certificate is from the teacher college at Northeastern
State University in Oklahoma. She is not a native Texan, being born and raised
in Missouri, but she moved here as quick as she could!
Foreign Language Department

Mrs. Drymalla is proud to be one of the founding teachers of Pope John XXIII
High school. She has taught for 37 years – 28 of those in Fort Bend ISD at
Sugar Land Middle School teaching Spanish. She graduated from Sam Houston State
University; but has numerous graduate hours in education from the University of
St. Thomas and the University of Houston/Victoria. She is currently pursuing a
master’s degree in library certification from the University of North Texas in
Denton. Mrs. Drymalla is a native Texan and has lived in Houston for 37 years
with her husband, Leroy. She has two adult children – a daughter and a son
(also a daughter-in-law.) She is anxiously awaiting the possibility of a
grandchild, until then she has to contend with five grand-dogs, and 4
grand-cats. She is currently the school Librarian and enjoys reading, knitting, and going out to the farm almost
every weekend.

Margie Patrick is a native Houstonian and graduate from Memorial High School.
She attended Texas Tech University and graduated with a B.A. in Spanish and
Sociology. With over 20 years of teaching experience, she spent 18 years in
Katy ISD with 13 of those years at Taylor High School. Mrs. Patrick has two
married sons, one daughter, and three grandchildren. She and her husband reside
in the Katy area and they have been married over 36 years. While in high school
and college, she spent 3 summers participating in the Amigos de las Americas
program in Honduras. Mrs. Patrick enjoys traveling, fishing, mission trips, and
most of all, being a grandmother.
Lisa McCauley lmccauley@pj23.org
Lisa McCauley has taught French - in its Parisian and Cajun
forms – for fifteen years. She is a native of New Orleans, and has a rich
Creole family history. After graduating from St. Mary's Dominican High School,
Mrs. McCauley earned a B.A. in French and an M.S. in Human Ecology at Louisiana
State University. Although now a resident of Katy, Lisa continues to play
traditional French Louisiana "Cajun" music with her husband, Cory. The couple
has one son.
Theology Department
Roland Millare rmillare@pj23.org
Mr. Roland Millare, a native
Houstonian, serves as Theology Department Chairperson and has been teaching at
the school since it opened. He went to St. Francis De Sales for K-8th and
graduated in 1999 from St. Thomas High School. He received a B.A. in Theology
from Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio . He enjoys reading, walking,
drinking coffee, hanging out with friends, and above all enjoying time with his
beautiful wife Veronica. Currently, he teaches two classes: Introduction to
Catholicism and Understanding the Scriptures.
Arland Nichols anichols@pj23.org
Arland Nichols is new to Pope John XXIII and has
quickly touched many aspects of the school community. He teaches courses on
Morality and Scripture, serves as Campus Minister, and leads the liturgical
choir during weekly school Masses. In the athletic arena, Arland coaches both
Cross Country and Track. Since graduating from Texas A&M with a B.A. in
Philosophy and minor in Psychology, he has been pursuing a Masters of Divinity
at the University of St. Thomas Graduate School of Theology, St. Mary’s
Seminary. Arland and his wife Cindy have recently moved to Katy along with
their beautiful, new baby Joseph.
Jennifer Sanders jsanders@pj23.org
Jennifer Sanders grew up in Beaumont, Texas, attending St. Anne School from K-8th
and Monsignor Kelly High School. After graduating from Kelly in 1996, she went
to the University of Notre Dame where she completed a B.S. in Biology in May of
2000. She spent a year in Boston, MA as a Jesuit volunteer. In South Boston,
she worked as a youth minister for at-risk adolescents. From 2001 – 2003, she
worked as a junior high religion teacher at Our Lady of Guadalupe School in
Houston. She coordinated all-school liturgies, service projects, and retreats,
as well as coached volleyball. In 2005, she married a native Midwesterner, Andy
Sanders, and they recently bought a house in Pearland. In her spare time, she
enjoys reading, fishing, singing in the choir, and watching Notre Dame
football.
Fine Arts Department

Cyndy is a “pioneer” Pope
John XXIII teacher, a native Houstonian, and a proud Louisiana State University
graduate, having earned a B.S. in Art Education as well as several post-graduate
hours in the visual arts. Her teaching career spans 23 years and has included
working in Germany, Pennsylvania, New Orleans, Chicago and Katy. Cindy serves as
Fine Arts Department Chairperson while teaching Art I-IV, acting as the TAPPS
Division 2A State Art Director, and moderating the Paint and Palette Art
Club. A strong advocate for the arts at the local, state and national levels,
Cyndy is mother to three wonderful adult children and enjoys traveling
internationally.
Bob Littlefield

Bob Littlefield joined the faculty of Pope John XXIII as
the band director in 2006 after 30 successful years of teaching in the public
school system of Texas, most recently at Cypress Creek High School in the
Cypress Fairbanks ISD. Originally from West Columbia, Texas, he graduated with
honors and received his Bachelor of Science in Music Education from Lamar
University in Beaumont and his Master of Music in Music Education and
Supervision from Texas A & I University, currently Texas A & M in Kingsville.
Under his direction, his bands and individual students have compiled an
impressive record of achievements and awards. Mr. Littlefield is an active band
clinician and adjudicator and is a member of the Texas Music Educators
Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, Association of Texas Small School
Bands, and Texas Music Adjudicators Association. In his spare time, he sings
with the Houston Tidelanders Barbershop Harmony Chorus and enjoys time with his
wife Grace, son Robbie, and family dachshund Heidi.
Betsy Barry bbarry@pj23.org
Betsy Barry is a native Texan, born and raised in Lubbock. She graduated
from Coronado High School in 1980 and received her B.A. in Theatre Arts from
Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas in 1984. In 1985, she was hired
as Technical Director of the Theatre Department at Southwestern and one year
later, became an adjunct faculty member. Before joining the Pope John
XXIII faculty in 2005, Ms. Barry earned Certification in Secondary English, Speech, Debate, and Drama .
In both 2006 and 2007, she and her theatre students applied for and won the BP A+ for Energy
education grant which earned them $10,000 to write and produce plays on
alternative energy.

A native Houstonian and Strake Jesuit College Preparatory
graduate, Mr. Mills earned a B.S. in Exercise Science at Texas Tech University.
After his sophomore year as a Red Raider, Mr. Mills began coaching in summer
athletic leagues at Strake Jesuit. He has been coaching high school students
football and baseball ever since. While a student in Lubbock, Scot met his wife
Amy and they now have two children- Ethan (3) and Caitlyn (6). He and his family are
parishioners at Epiphany of the Lord Catholic Church in Katy and enjoy spending
time fishing, hunting, and searching for adventure on their farm in East Texas.
